Functional Food
C2B2 Core Research Area
Functional foods, which are rich in bioactive compounds, offer significant health benefits beyond basic nutrition. At C2B2, we focus on exploring the hidden health potentials of honey, pigeon peas, pineapple, ginger, and cocoa. These traditional foods, abundant in the Philippines, are known for their medicinal properties and are a key area of our research.
We employ state-of-the-art techniques such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to profile these foods, uncovering their complex biochemical compositions and identifying bioactive compounds that promote wellness and combat chronic diseases. By evaluating the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-Alzheimer, and anticancer activities of these compounds through in vitro and in vivo studies, we aim to understand the molecular and genetic processes underlying their health benefits. By identifying and harnessing the bioactive compounds in these functional foods, we aim to develop functional food products that can enhance public health, prevent diseases, and improve overall well-being, thereby contributing to the health and wellness of the Filipino population. |
