Doralyn S. Dalisay, Ph.D. Director Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology (C2B2) University of San Agustin Iloilo City 5000 Philippines Email address: [email protected] |
Doralyn was born and raised in a small town of San Joaquin, Iloilo in Panay Island, Philippines. She graduated from University of San Agustin with a degree in Pharmacy (cum laude) and earned her Master of Science in Biology at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. She was awarded a scholarship (merit category) for graduate degree by Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). In 2001, she moved to Sydney, Australia as an AusAID scholar and joined the laboratory of Prof. Staffan Kjelleberg at the University of New South Wales to complete her doctoral studies in microbiology. Her PhD thesis provided insights in understanding the mode of action of antibacterial protein AlpP produced by an antifouling marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas tunicata. She discovered MSHA pilus in P. tunicata as the key colonization factor of this bacterium on higher marine organisms. She moved to the United States to pursue postdoctoral training in marine natural products chemistry and joined the laboratory of Prof. Ted F. Molinski at the University of California, San Diego. Her research work led to the discovery of novel antifungal and anticancer compounds produced by rare marine invertebrates. After her postdoctoral training, she moved to Vancouver, Canada and joined the laboratory of Prof. Raymond J. Andersen at University of British Columbia to pursue research work on bioactive compounds from marine sediment-derived microorganisms. After three years in Canada, Doralyn moved back to the United States and joined the Institute of Biological Chemistry at Washington State University as an Asst. Research Professor, where she is developing methods for plant tissue MALDI mass spectrometry imaging and unique approaches to discover novel bioactive compounds using evidence-based ecological chemistry (plant-microbe interactions). She returned to the Philippines in the fall of 2015 as "DOST Balik Scientist" to establish research program on natural products drug discovery at the University of San Agustin.
She is a pioneering scientist to work on the biodiversity, biological activities and chemistry of marine sediment-derived actinobacteria from Philippine archipelago, that could one day help to find new antibiotics and potentially address the problem of drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria. Her group explored the Philippine archipelago for the presence of promising actinobacteria found in the marine sediment samples collected in different islands in the country. Her laboratory at C2B2, Iloilo City, houses a library of more than 3,000 highly diverse marine sediment-derived actinobacteria isolates that serves as “BioBank for Drug Discovery Research” in the country.
Doralyn has published research papers in high impact journals. Her publication received more than 2500 citations. She discovered more than 20 antibiotic and anticancer compounds from marine organisms. She has won a number of awards in recognition for her research, publications and patents. She received the 2019 National Research Council of the Philippines, NRCP Achievement Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences Division, 2019 Most Outstanding Professional in the field of Pharmacy awarded by Philippine Regulatory Commission and the 2019 Best Mentor Award for Health Research awarded by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology. She is a Diplomate of the Philippine Academy for Microbiology. Her research program is supported by National Research Council of the Philippines- Department of Science and Technology (NRCP-DOST), Philippine Council for Health Research and Development Department of Science and Technology (PCHRD-DOST), the United States Agency for International Development, Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for Development (USAID-STRIDE) Program and University of San Agustin.
